What this sheet is for

Turn up with the session already planned. Leave with a note of what worked, so the next one builds on it rather than starting again.

Who it is for

Grassroots and youth football coaches, assistant coaches and the parent-coach running a session for the first time.

How to use it

  1. Write the session aim in one line before anything else.
  2. Plan each practice on its own row: the set-up, the coaching points and how to progress it.
  3. Enter your own timings in the time column.
  4. List the equipment so nothing is left in the clubhouse.
  5. Fill in the review straight after the session, while it is fresh.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: One training session planned before the coach gets to the pitch — the aim, each practice with its set-up and coaching points, and a review afterwards so the next session starts from what actually happened.

Your timings, your governing body's limits. Session length, players per coach, pitch and goal sizes and any limits on contact or heading are your governing body's and your club's — the time column is yours to fill.

Write-on lines: Squad / age group · Date · Venue / pitch · Coach · Assistants · Session aim · Players expected · Attended

Session — warm-up, practices, game, cool-down — one row each

Table, 5 rows: Time · Practice / activity · Set-up: area, groups, balls · Coaching points · Progression

Write-on lines: Equipment to bring · Pitch / area booked

Review — filled in after the session, before it is forgotten

Write-on lines: What worked · What did not · Players to watch or follow up · Next session should start with

Questions

Why is there no session length or player-to-coach ratio on the sheet?

Because those are set by your governing body and your club, and they differ by age group and country. The time column is yours to fill; the sheet only gives the structure.
