What this sheet is for

See the whole squad's availability for a block of fixtures on one page. A short week is spotted while there is still time to find a player.

Who it is for

Managers and captains of football teams, and any club side that picks from a squad bigger than the team.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the fixture key on page two first, numbering the fixtures in order.
  2. List every player, including subs and triallists, with a contact.
  3. As replies come in, write A, N, ? or I in the cell for that fixture.
  4. Count the A column for each fixture and write how many short you are.
  5. Chase the question marks before the team sheet is written.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: The whole squad down the side, the next block of fixtures across the top, and one letter in each cell — so the manager can see on one page who is short before a team sheet is even started.

One letter per cell. Write a letter in each cell as replies come in: A for available, N for not available, ? for no reply yet, and I for injured or suspended. The numbered columns match the fixture key on the second page — fill that in first, then chase the question marks.

Questions

Why twelve fixtures and not the whole season?

Because availability more than a few weeks out is guesswork, and a grid wide enough for a season would have cells too small to write in. Start a new grid when the twelve are played.

What does the 'players needed' column mean?

Your own squad size for that fixture — a starting side plus the subs you want. Formats and squad sizes vary by competition, so it is a blank rather than a number.
