What this is

Upkeep Papers publishes blank record sheets — service logs, maintenance schedules, inspection checklists and registers — for houses, vehicles, machines and let property. There are currently 97 of them. Every one is a free PDF, in four files: A4 and US Letter, print and fillable.

The idea came from a fairly ordinary observation. The internet is full of free printables, and most of them are bad in the same three ways: they are laid out for one paper size and print badly on the other, they are flat images you cannot type into, and the fields are whatever somebody guessed rather than what the job actually needs. A boiler service record and a well water test are not the same table with a different heading.

How the sheets are made

Every sheet is generated from a layout definition rather than drawn by hand, which is why they are internally consistent and why the A4 and Letter versions match exactly. The layout sits inside an area that fits both papers, and is centred on whichever page you print.

Three design decisions run through all of them.

• Rows are tall enough to write in. Most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with a pen. Ours are set at around 9–10 mm, which is what an adult actually needs to write a date and a few words.
• Ink is used sparingly. Hairline rules, light zebra banding, no solid panels. Somebody printing twelve copies should not resent us.
• Every sheet identifies itself. A photocopied page found on a workbench in two years still says what it is and where it came from.

What we deliberately do not publish

You will notice the sheets are blank where you might expect them to be helpful. There are no manufacturer service intervals, no target chemistry ranges for pools, no safe limits for drinking water, no statements of what the law requires.

That is deliberate, for three reasons.

• Those figures differ. By model, by build year, by installation, by country, by county. A confident wrong number is worse than a blank line.
• They belong to someone else. Manufacturer schedules are the manufacturer's work, and reproducing them is not ours to do.
• They change. A printed sheet outlives a regulation. A sheet that holds your figures stays correct; a sheet that asserts ours goes stale.

So the sheets are designed to hold the right answer rather than to assert it, and the pages around them point you at where the right answer comes from.

Who makes it

It is a small independent project, not a company with a team behind it, and there is no point pretending otherwise. It is new — it has no traffic, no downloads worth boasting about and no reviews, and you will not find invented numbers claiming otherwise anywhere on the site.

What we can say is that the field lists have been thought about properly, the print geometry has been tested, and nothing is gated. If a sheet is wrong or missing something, tell us — that is genuinely the fastest way this gets better.

How it is paid for

Advertising on the article pages, and eventually optional bundles for people who would rather buy the set than download it piece by piece. Nothing is hidden behind an email address. The full account is here.
