What this sheet is for

Give one day's digging a record that says what was checked, what was dug and what moved, written on the day rather than reconstructed later.

Who it is for

Groundworks contractors, site supervisors and small builders running their own excavation, and anyone who has to answer for what went into a hole.

How to use it

  1. Write who traced the services and the permit reference, if your site uses one, before breaking ground.
  2. Record each excavation with its size, the ground found, how it was supported and whether water was met.
  3. List the plant and people on site with their hours.
  4. Log each lorry from the ticket, in or out, and sign the sheet at the end of the day.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: One day of groundworks on one site: what was checked, what was dug, who and what was on site, and the loads in and out.

Checked, not specified. How far to keep from a service, when a dig needs shoring and who signs a permit are your site's rules and the rules where you work. The first lines record that the checks were done.

Write-on lines: Site · Date · Supervisor · Weather / ground · Services traced & marked by · Permit to dig ref, if used · Trial holes dug by hand? · Edge protection & spoil agreed? · Plant on site (type, ID) · Operators · Labour on site · Hours worked

Excavations — one line per trench, pit or reduced-level area

Table, 3 rows: Location · Length · Width · Depth · Ground found · Support · Water? · Services met

Loads in and out — from the tickets — one line per lorry

Table, 3 rows: Time · In / out · Material · Haulier · Ticket no. · Tip / source

Signature strip: Supervisor · Print name · Date

Questions

Why does the sheet not say when an excavation needs shoring?

Because that decision depends on the ground, the depth, the water and the rules where you work, and it is made on site by someone competent to make it. The sheet records what support was used; it does not decide it for you.
