What this sheet is for

Get somebody started properly, with the checks, paperwork, safety induction and equipment handled as a list rather than remembered in pieces.

Who it is for

Small employers taking on their first few staff, and managers inducting into an existing team.

How to use it

  1. Work through the before-the-first-day section a week ahead, not on the morning.
  2. Add the checks that apply where you are — the list prompts, it does not prescribe.
  3. Record the safety induction; it is the item most often skipped and most often asked about.
  4. Write down what equipment, keys and logins were issued.
  5. Both sign it and keep it on file.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Does this cover the legal checks I have to make before someone starts?

It prompts you to record that you made them. What those checks are — eligibility to work, tax registration, age rules, insurance, sector licensing — differs by country, and this sheet deliberately names none of them.
