What this sheet is for

Write the session once, read it off the board at poolside, and keep it so a block of training can be looked back over rather than remembered.

Who it is for

Swimming coaches, assistant coaches and lane leaders at club squads, masters groups and school swimming.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the squad, pool length and lane groups before the session.
  2. Write each part of the set as one line: reps and distance, stroke, focus, effort, interval and kit.
  3. Put the subtotal for each line in the last column and add them up at the foot.
  4. Note what went well and what to change, so the next sheet starts from this one.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: The coach's set sheet for one squad session — warm-up, drills, main set and swim-down line by line, written so it can be read off the board.

Write-on lines: Squad · Date · Coach · Pool length · Lanes · Session length

Lane groups — who swims where, the lane leader, and how the set is adjusted

Table, 3 rows: Lane · Swimmers · Lane leader · Focus / adjustment

The set — one line per instruction in the order it is swum — intervals, paces and totals are your own figures for your squad

Table, 10 rows: Part · Reps × distance · Stroke · Drill / focus · Effort · Interval / rest · Kit · Subtotal

Write-on lines: Total distance · Main set distance · What went well · Change next time

Questions

Why are there no intervals or paces printed?

Because a send-off that suits one squad is wrong for another, and only the coach on the poolside knows the group. The interval column is for the figure you set, in whatever form you use — a send-off, a rest, a pace.

Can one sheet cover several lanes doing different sets?

Write the adjustment for each lane in the lane groups table, and keep the main set as the common line. If two lanes swim entirely different sessions, use two sheets.
