Know each combination's real height and check it against every low bridge before setting off. The cab notice is updated whenever the trailer, body or load changes.
Lorry, bus and coach drivers, transport planners and operators whose vehicles run under bridges, canopies or height barriers.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: The measured travelling height of each vehicle and trailer combination, with the cab notice kept to match, then the low bridges on each route checked against it before setting off.
Measure it, do not remember it. Measure from the ground to the highest point of the vehicle, body or load as it will travel, and measure again whenever the trailer, body or load changes. How much room your operator wants above the vehicle at a bridge is your operator's rule: write it in below, and never set off on a remembered height.
Write-on lines: Operator / depot · Clearance your operator requires · Measured with (pole, laser, tape)
Table, 12 rows: Unit · Trailer / body · Load · Height · How measured · Date · Cab notice · By
Table, 20 rows: Date · Driver · Vehicle · Height · Route · Restriction · Signed · Clears? · Diversion · Sat nav
Write-on lines: Checked by · Date · Notes
Because how much room your operator wants above the vehicle at a bridge is your operator's rule. The sheet has a box at the top for that figure, so each route check is made against it rather than against a number printed for everybody.
Trailers, bodies and loads differ in height, and a combination measured last week can be taller today. The measured line and the cab notice should always describe the combination actually being driven.
Do the same walk-around in the same order every day and leave a record of what was found, who it was reported to and what happened next.
Put the whole movement on one page before it starts, so the bridge that will not take the height is found at the desk and not at the bridge.
Decide the day once, on paper, before the engine starts — and keep the gate codes, closing times and awkward approaches where the next driver can find them.
Check every load against the vehicle's own plated weights, axle by axle, before it leaves. Re-weighs after a drop or a load shift go on the same sheet.
