What this sheet is for

Rotate toys, chews and feeders on purpose, and remember what each animal made of them. Items it guarded or broke are listed so nobody gives them again.

Who it is for

Kennel, cattery and rescue staff who give animals toys and feeding enrichment.

How to use it

  1. Write a line each time an animal is given a new item, with its type.
  2. Watch the first time, and write E, I, G or S for how it responded.
  3. Date each clean, and the day the item was removed and why.
  4. Write what replaced it, so the next item is a change.
  5. Add anything not to give this animal to the list at the foot.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: Which toy, chew or feeder each animal had, how it responded the first time, and when the item was cleaned, changed or taken away, so every animal gets variety and nothing unsafe is left in with it.

Watched the first time. Watch an animal the first time it has a new item, and write what it did rather than a guess at why. Anything it guarded, broke pieces off or was frightened by goes in the list at the end, so that nobody gives it again.

Questions

How often should toys be changed?

The sheet does not set a schedule. Changing items regularly keeps their interest, but how often depends on the animal and your own routine. The record shows how long each item has been in, so you can see when it is time.

What counts as stressed?

Whatever you saw that worried you, in plain words: hiding, panting, freezing or trying to escape the item. Write it down and tell whoever your procedure says; the sheet is not a behaviour assessment.
