What this sheet is for

Send the pupil home knowing exactly what to work on and why, and come back with a record of what they actually did.

Who it is for

Instrumental and singing teachers and their pupils, and parents supporting a child's practice at home.

How to use it

  1. Fill the header in the lesson, including whatever practice time was agreed.
  2. Write each piece or exercise with the bars and the one thing to listen for.
  3. Send the sheet home in the music case.
  4. The pupil writes a diary row for each practice session — what was done and what was hard.
  5. Bring it back to the next lesson; the diary tells the teacher where to start.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: The sheet that goes home after the lesson — what to practise this week, what to listen for in each piece, and a diary the pupil fills in for the teacher to see next time. Practice time is whatever teacher, pupil and household agreed — no target of ours.

Write-on lines: Pupil · Instrument · Week beginning · Next lesson · Teacher · Agreed practice time · Bring next time

This week's assignments — set by the teacher — 'listen for' is what turns repetition into practice

Table, 4 rows: Piece / scale / exercise · Bars / section · Listen for / work on · Tempo

Practice diary — filled in by the pupil — one row per session

Table, 7 rows: Day · Time spent · What I practised · What went well / what was hard

Write-on lines: Parent / carer seen · Question for the teacher next lesson

Questions

Why does it not say how many minutes to practise?

Because the right amount depends on the pupil's age, level and week, and it is agreed between teacher and household. The sheet has a blank for that agreement and no figure of its own.

Why a 'listen for' column rather than just the piece?

Playing a piece through five times is repetition; playing it listening for the rhythm in bar twelve is practice. The column is the teacher's instruction for what to attend to.
