Check the yard's fire risks every month and know the horses can be got out in a hurry. A plan nobody has walked through is only a piece of paper.

A free printable stable inspection checklist: doors, bolts, windows, lights, fixings, floors, drains and roofs checked for every stable, with a fault log.

Find the loose bolt, the bare wire and the cracked window before a horse does. Each fault stays on the log until someone has repaired it and checked the repair.
Yard owners, livery and riding school managers, and anyone responsible for a row of stables.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: Every stable inspected against the same list, one column per stable, with each fault carried to the log on page two until it is repaired.
Tick, F or a dash. Write the stable numbers across the top. In each box put a tick if it is sound, F if there is a fault (write it in the log overleaf) or a dash if that stable has none. No sizes or heights are printed: what is safe depends on the horse and the building.
Write-on lines: Yard · Date of inspection · Inspected by
Also printed: Stable number or name, written in · Check · Door, hinges and frame · Door opens outwards or slides smoothly · Top bolt · Kick bolt or bottom bolt · Window glass behind a grille or mesh · Light fitting covered, out of reach · Switch and wiring protected · Tie ring and its fixing · Haynet ring or hay rack · Manger and water fittings secure · No nails, splinters or sharp edges · Floor and mats level, not slippery · Drain clear · Walls and kicking boards sound · Roof, ceiling and gutters · Ventilation openings clear · Room to turn round and lie down

Because what is safe depends on the horse, the building and the fittings, and one printed figure would be wrong for many yards. The sheet records whether each item is sound; a builder, electrician or vet can advise on sizes for your own stables.
The sheet does not set an interval. Many yards inspect on a regular round and again after a storm or any damage; choose what suits your yard and your insurer, and keep the sheets as the record.

Record tack checks so that worn stitching is found in the tack room rather than discovered at a canter.
Settle who was supposed to do what, and show quickly when one person is carrying more than their share.
Record whose property is on the yard at the point it arrives, which prevents almost every argument about a missing rug.
