Radiator and Pipework Survey Sheet

A free printable heating survey form — each room's existing radiator, valves and condition, the pipe route, what is proposed, and the system as found.

What this sheet is for

Get the whole house down on one walk-round, so the quote, the order and the fitting day all come from the same list rather than three different memories of it.

Who it is for

Heating engineers and plumbers surveying for new or replacement radiators, a system upgrade or a boiler change that touches the pipework.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the boiler, system type and pipework material before the first room.
  2. Take one line per radiator: what is there, its valves and condition, and what you propose — with the size from your own calculation.
  3. Tick what you saw of the system: cold spots, sludge, microbore, buried pipes.
  4. Write down where the heat-loss figures came from and anything the quote must allow for, and keep it as the survey the quote rests on.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A heating survey room by room: what is on the wall now, what state it is in, how the pipes get to it, and what is proposed in its place.

Your calculation, your sizes. No output figures or sizing rules are printed here. The heat a room needs is your own heat-loss calculation; the radiator that meets it comes from the maker's tables. Both are written in as yours.

Write-on lines: Property · Date of survey · Surveyed by · Heat-loss figures from · Boiler make, model & location · System type · Cylinder / tank location · Pipework material found

Rooms — one line per radiator or heated room — a room with two is two lines

Table, 6 rows: Room · Existing rad · Valves · Condition · Keep / new / add · Proposed rad · Pipe route & size

System as found — tick what applies; sketch the pipe runs on the back

  • Cold at the bottom of radiators — sludge suspected
  • Microbore, buried or boxed-in pipework
  • Room thermostat, TRVs or zoning present
  • Leaks, corrosion, or noisy pump or valves

Write-on lines: Flush or clean proposed? · Access issues · Customer wishes and anything the quote must allow for

Questions

Why is there no radiator sizing on the sheet?

Because the output a room needs comes from a heat-loss calculation for that room, and the radiator that meets it from the maker's own tables for that model. Both are yours to work out; the sheet has a column for the answer and a box for where the figures came from.

Is this the same as a boiler installation record?

No. That records the appliance that went in. This is the survey of the emitters and pipework before anything is ordered, and it is just as useful when the boiler is staying put.
