What this sheet is for

Start each shift knowing the vehicle is fit to carry a paying passenger and carries what a licensing officer would expect to find, with the check written down.

Who it is for

Licensed taxi and private hire drivers, and operators who want the same check done on every vehicle every day.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the vehicle, plate number, date and odometer before you start.
  2. Walk round the outside, then check the passenger space, then the licensing items.
  3. Strike out anything that does not apply to your licence and write your authority's own items on the two blank lines.
  4. Write any defect on the line at the foot, who you reported it to and whether the vehicle went out.
  5. Sign and time the sheet; a blank defects line means none were found.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: The walk-around before the first job of the day for a licensed taxi or private hire car. What a licensed vehicle carries and displays is set by the licensing authority where you drive: strike out what does not apply to your licence and write your authority's own items in.

Questions

Why does the sheet not list what my licence requires me to carry?

Because every licensing authority has its own list and its own inspection schedule, and they change. The items printed are the ones drivers commonly check; your authority's list overrides them and there is room to add it.

How is this different from a van daily check?

The mechanical walk-around is similar, but a taxi carries passengers and a licence. The passenger space, the meter, the badge and plate, the card reader and the wheelchair kit have their own lines here and would be missing from a van sheet.
