A free printable club boat defect log: each fault reported, tagged out of use and passed to the bosun, then the repair, parts and cost, and who returned it to use.

What this sheet is for

Keep a damaged boat off the water until it is repaired, with who found it and who fixed it. The numbered tag ties the boat to its line on the sheet.

Who it is for

Sailing, rowing and paddling clubs, boathouses and activity centres with a shared fleet.

How to use it

  1. Write a line as soon as a fault is found, and put its number on the out-of-use tag.
  2. Describe where the fault is so someone else can find it.
  3. Tell the bosun or boat captain, and note who you told and when.
  4. Record the repair, the parts and the cost, then have someone check it before it goes back into use.
  5. Take the tag off only when the Returned column is signed.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: One line for each fault found on a club boat, engine or piece of kit, from the moment it is reported and taken out of use until it is repaired, checked and back in service.

Out of use means tagged. Tag the boat or item where the fault is, write this sheet's line number on the tag, and tell the bosun or boat captain before you leave. Describe the fault so someone who was not there can find it: which side, which seat, which fitting. Only the person who signs it back into use takes the tag off.

Write-on lines: Club · Fleet or boathouse · Bosun or boat captain · Phone

Also printed: Reported · Out of use · Repaired

Table, 12 rows: No. · Date · By · Boat or item · Fault and where · Tagged · Told · What was done · By, date · Returned

Questions

Who decides a boat is fit to use again?

Whoever the club makes responsible for the fleet, usually the bosun or boat captain. The sheet records who checked it and when; it does not set a standard for the repair.

Why number the tag?

So the tag on the boat and the line on the sheet point to each other. Anyone who finds a tagged boat can read what is wrong and whether it has been dealt with.
