What this sheet is for

Put the trip on paper before you launch and leave a copy behind, so somebody knows where you went and when to worry.

Who it is for

Kayakers, canoeists and paddleboarders, clubs, groups and anyone going out alone.

How to use it

  1. Fill it in before loading the boats and give a copy to somebody not coming.
  2. Set an overdue time and say plainly what that person should do when it passes.
  3. List escape points along the route, not just the ends of it.
  4. Ring them when you are off the water. An unnecessary callout is worse than an awkward phone call.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Does it tell me whether conditions are safe?

No. What is safe depends on the water, the weather, the boat and the paddler, and no printed sheet can see any of those. The judgement is yours and your group's; this records the plan you made from it.
