What this sheet is for

Arrive with the car checked, the kit packed and the paperwork done, so the day is spent on track rather than in the paddock.

Who it is for

Road and track car owners doing a track day, an evening session or a test day, from the first time to the fiftieth.

How to use it

  1. Confirm the booking, noise limit and group, and note the arrival time.
  2. Work through the car section in the week before, to your own car's figures.
  3. Pack the driver's kit and tools the night before.
  4. On the day: sign on, briefing, noise test, empty the car, sighting laps.
  5. Write what you would bring or change next time in the notes.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: Getting a road or track car, the driver and the kit ready for a track day, from the booking through to the sighting laps, so the morning is spent driving rather than looking for a torque wrench.

Your car's figures, the organiser's rules. Tyre pressures, brake fluid choice, fluid levels and wheel nut torque are your car's figures and your tyre supplier's — write them on the Track Tyre Pressure and Temperature Record and the car's own handbook page, not here. The organiser's briefing and noise rules override anything on this list.

Write-on lines: Circuit / organiser · Date · Car · Group / session

Booking and paperwork

  • Booking confirmed, arrival time, noise limit and group noted
  • Driving licence and any indemnity or medical form the organiser asks for
  • Insurance for the day arranged and recorded on the cover record
  • Passenger arrangements checked against the organiser's rules

The car, the week before

  • Brake pads, discs and fluid checked and changed if they are near your limit
  • Tyres checked for wear, age, damage and pressure to your own figure
  • Oil, coolant and other fluids at the levels your handbook gives
  • Wheel nuts torqued to your figure and a witness mark made
  • Belts, hoses, mounts and anything that was making a noise looked at
  • Battery secured, tow eye located and fitted if it screws in
  • Anything loose, rattling or leaking fixed before it is found on the day
  • Glass, lights and mirrors clean, wipers and washers working for a wet day

Driver and kit

  • Helmet that meets the organiser's rules, and clothing that covers arms and legs
  • Torque wrench, pressure gauge, jack, basic tools and tape
  • Fuel — full or a plan for filling up, and cans if the circuit allows them
  • Water, food, sun cream, waterproofs and a chair
  • Timing app or lap timer, camera and their mounts charged

On the day

  • Sign on, attend the briefing and do the noise test
  • Empty the car: mats, loose items, anything in the boot or door pockets
  • Sighting laps behind the pace car before pushing on

Between sessions

  • Pressures checked and reset to your figure once the tyres have cooled
  • Wheel nuts checked against the witness marks
  • Brake pads, discs and fluid level looked at while everything is hot
  • Under the car and in the bay for leaks, and the tyres for wear and damage
  • Fuel level checked against the sessions left

After the last session

  • Cool-down lap driven and the car left off the handbrake while the brakes cool
  • Pressures put back to road figures before the drive home
  • Kit repacked, rubbish cleared and the paddock space left clean
  • What broke, what wore and what to bring next time written on the back

Questions

Why are there no pressures, torque figures or fluid specifications?

Because they belong to your car, your tyres and your brake pad choice, not to a general sheet. Write your own on the tyre record and in the car's handbook; the checklist only reminds you to check them.

What about insurance?

Ask your insurer, and record what they say on the Track Day Insurance and Cover Record. This checklist has a line to remind you; the answer has to come from the policy.
