What this sheet is for

Give a multi-year restoration a written history and an honest running cost, instead of a box of receipts and a memory of roughly how long the engine took.

Who it is for

Home restorers and small workshops working through a bare-metal or rolling restoration of a classic car, motorcycle or kit car.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the car and the stage the project is at now.
  2. After each session, log the date, the area worked on, what was done and the hours.
  3. Record parts and materials bought against the session that used them, with the cost and supplier.
  4. Update the hours and spend to date at the foot of the page each time.
  5. Note the next job and what you are waiting on, so the next session starts without a search.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A running diary of a restoration — each session of work, the hours it took, the parts it consumed and what it cost — so the project has a history and a total, not a vague memory.

Same day, every session. Write it down the same day. A restoration runs for years, and the hours and money vanish from memory long before the car is finished. The running total at the bottom is the honest answer to 'what has it cost so far'.

Questions

Why log hours on a hobby project?

Because hours are the honest measure of what a restoration costs, and they are the first thing a buyer, an insurer or your own future self will ask about. They also show which stages take longer than anyone expects.

Where does the originality of the parts go?

On the Classic Car Originality and Parts Record. This log is the diary of the work; that sheet is the component-by-component record of what is on the car and the evidence for it.
