A track day insurance record — questions to put to your insurer before booking, and the cover held for each event: provider, certificate and excess.

What this sheet is for

Keep a written record of what cover was in place on each day on track, and who told you so, instead of relying on a phone call you half remember.

Who it is for

Anyone taking a road-registered or track car onto a circuit — track days, test days, evening sessions and driving experiences with your own car.

How to use it

  1. Fill in the car and the road policy details once at the top.
  2. Before each booking, work through the questions and get answers in writing.
  3. Record the provider, certificate number, cover type, excess and cost for each event.
  4. Write who confirmed the cover and on what date.
  5. Keep it with the car's papers.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Every track day or test day with the cover that was in place for it — provider, certificate number, what it covered, the excess, and who confirmed it — kept with the car's papers.

Ask the insurer; write down what they said. What your ordinary policy says about circuits, what a track day policy excludes and what excess applies are questions for your insurer and the policy wording. Record the answer you were given, who gave it and when.

Write-on lines: Car · Registration · Owner / driver · Road policy & insurer

Before each booking — tick once you have the answer in writing

  • Road insurer asked, in writing, about circuit use
  • Track day cover quoted for this circuit and car
  • Each named driver on the quote
  • Excess and insured value read and noted
  • Exclusions read — what is not covered
  • Organiser's indemnity form read and understood
  • Recovery and the return journey checked
  • Passenger arrangements confirmed with the insurer

Questions

Does my road insurance cover track days?

That is a question for your insurer and your policy wording, and the answer varies. This sheet does not say what any policy covers; it gives you the questions to ask and a place to record the answer you were given.

Why record who confirmed it?

Because if it is ever needed, the name, date and what was said are the only evidence of the conversation. A row with a name on it is worth a great deal more than a row without one.
