What this sheet is for

Put a race car, classic or summer car away so it comes out in the spring in the state it went in, and remember what was blocked, disconnected or deferred.

Who it is for

Owners of competition cars, classics, kit cars and any vehicle that stands for months between seasons.

How to use it

  1. Fill in where the car is stored, the date, the mileage and who holds the keys.
  2. Tick each laying-up step as it is done, and write down anything you blocked or disconnected.
  3. Log each visit while the car stands: battery, tyres, damp, pests, leaks.
  4. Before the first drive, work through the coming-out list in order.
  5. Note the date and mileage out, so the storage period is on record for insurers or a buyer.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Putting a car away for the winter or between seasons, and bringing it back out — what was done to it going in, what was checked while it slept, and what it needed to run again.

Record what you did, so you can undo it. How to lay a car up depends on the car, the storage and how long it will stand: a handbook, a specialist or your club will have a view. This sheet is the record of what you actually did, so that in spring you know what to undo.

Write-on lines: Car · Storage location · Laid up on · Brought out on · Mileage / hours in · Mileage / hours out · Insurance / cover type · Keys held by

  • Tyres set or car on stands; handbrake off, chocked
  • Battery disconnected, removed or on a maintainer
  • Exhaust, intake and vents blocked; noted below
  • Cover fitted; dehumidifier set; photos taken

Coming out — before the first drive

  • Blocks removed from exhaust, intake and vents
  • Battery refitted and charged; electrics checked
  • Fluids checked; deferred oil change done
  • Tyres set to running pressures; flat spots checked
  • Brakes freed off before moving under power
  • Insurance, tax and any test in date (check local rules)

While in storage — each visit — and what was blocked or disconnected

Table, 3 rows: Date · Battery · Tyres · Damp / pests / leaks · Engine run? · Notes

Questions

Should the engine be run while the car is in storage?

Opinions differ and it depends on the car and the storage, so the sheet asks only whether you did. Follow your handbook, your specialist or your club, and record what you chose so you can judge the result in spring.

Why write down what was blocked or disconnected?

Because the commonest spring-time fault is something that was done on purpose in autumn: a rag in the exhaust, a fuse pulled, a battery lead off. The list you make going in is the list you undo coming out.
