What this sheet is for

Plan a week's ground work around the fixtures it has to be ready for. Keep a record of who inspected each pitch and called it fit or off.

Who it is for

Volunteer and paid groundsmen at football, rugby, cricket and hockey clubs, and the committee member who stands in for them.

How to use it

  1. Enter the week's fixtures first, with the pitch each one is on.
  2. List the tasks for the week by pitch or area — cutting, marking, rolling, repairs.
  3. Tick the day each task was done and note the machine or material used.
  4. Record each pitch inspection, the decision and who made it.
  5. Carry any task not done into next week's sheet.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A groundsman's week on one sheet — which pitches or areas need what work on which days, the fixtures that work has to be ready for, and the inspection that decided whether each pitch was played. Cutting heights, feed rates and how often a pitch is rolled or aerated are your own programme and your governing body's guidance: write the task as you do it.

Fixtures this week — what the work has to be ready for — who calls a pitch off is your competition's rule

Table, 4 rows: Date · Pitch · Fixture · Inspected at · Fit to play? · Decided by

Tasks — tick the day each was done — a task not done this week carries over

Table, 10 rows: Task · Pitch / area · Mon · Tue · Wed · Thu · Fri · Sat · Sun · Machine / material · Notes

Questions

Why does the sheet not list a standard weekly programme?

Because a programme depends on your grass, your soil, your climate and the season, and on what your governing body advises for your sport. The task rows are blank so the sheet records your programme, not a generic one.
