What this sheet is for

Stop the counter being left because a break was assumed rather than covered, and keep the week's hours in one place for whoever does the pay.

Who it is for

Managers and supervisors drawing up the week's rota for an independent shop or a branch with a small team.

How to use it

  1. Write the week beginning and the trading hours the rota has to cover.
  2. Fill in start and finish for each person each day, OFF for a day off, and total the hours.
  3. For every break, add a row: who, from, to, and who covers the till and the floor.
  4. Pin it up where the team can see it and initial breaks as they are taken.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: A week's rota for a shop with the break cover written beside it — who is on, when they break, and who holds the till and the floor while they do — so the counter is never left because a break was assumed.

Your break rules, your cover. How long a break is and when it is due are set by your contracts and the rules where you are — check both. This sheet has a blank for the break, not a figure, and it asks who covers the till while it is taken.

Write-on lines: Shop / branch · Week beginning · Rota drawn up by · Trading hours this week

Rota — start and finish for each day; write OFF for a day off

Questions

Why is there no break length on the sheet?

Because how long a break is and when it falls are set by your contracts and the working-time rules where you are — check both. The sheet has from and to columns for your own figures.

What if there is only one person on?

Then the break cover table shows it plainly: a row with nobody in the till column. That is the moment to bring someone in or move the break, and the sheet makes it visible before the day rather than during it.
