What this sheet is for

Open the same shop the same way whoever has the keys, and close it with nothing left on, unlocked or uncounted.

Who it is for

Keyholders, supervisors and managers of an independent shop or a branch, and anyone covering an open or close for the first time.

How to use it

  1. Print one for each trading day and write the date and the names at the top.
  2. Work down the opening list in order before the door is unlocked.
  3. Work down the closing list after the last customer, ending with the alarm.
  4. Use the notes for anything the next person on needs to know.

What is on the sheet

Questions

Why does the sheet not say what time to open or how much float to put in?

Because trading hours and float amounts are yours, and they vary from shop to shop. The sheet says to unlock at the shop's trading time and to count the float onto the till count sheet; the figures live there.

Is this the same as the premises opening and closing checklist?

That one is written for any premises. This is the shop version: floats and tills, card terminals, markdowns on the shelf edge, the fitting room and the A-board — the items a shop has and an office does not.
