What this sheet is for

Learn when the shop is actually busy and when it is only being browsed, so rotas and staffing follow the pattern rather than a guess.

Who it is for

Managers and owners of independent shops without a door counter, and branches checking a counter's figures by hand.

How to use it

  1. Write your trading hours down the first column.
  2. Make one stroke per person in as they come through the door, and total the hour when it ends.
  3. Copy the hour's transaction count from the till and divide it by the footfall for the conversion column.
  4. Total the day at the bottom and note the busiest and quietest hours.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A hand count of people through the door, hour by hour, set against the till's transaction count for the same hour — so the shop knows when it is busy and when it is browsing.

Your own rate, worked out on the line. Conversion is transactions divided by footfall, worked out by you for each hour in the last column. No target rate is printed: what a good rate looks like depends on what you sell and where you are, and the point of the sheet is to learn your own pattern week by week.

Questions

What is a good conversion rate?

The sheet does not say, because there is no one answer — it depends on what you sell, where you are and the day of the week. The point of counting is to learn your own pattern and notice when it changes.

Do I count groups as one or several?

Decide once and write it in the notes, then count the same way every day. Consistency matters more than the rule you choose.
