What this sheet is for
Count things by hand while doing something else, with the categories named and the totals worked out at the end of each row.
Who it is for
Stock takers, wildlife surveys, traffic counts, event door staff, market researchers, teachers, farmers and anyone counting things through a gate.
How to use it
- Write the categories down before you start counting.
- Say what your counting rule is — it matters when somebody repeats the count.
- Total each row when you stop, not from memory afterwards.
- Record the period counted, from and to.
- Have a second person check the totals where the number matters.

Total each row before you put the pen down. Tally marks are still the fastest way to count things while doing something else — stock, birds, cars, votes, customers, sheep through a gate. Total each row when you stop, not later.
