What this sheet is for

Wax, sharpen and repair when the skis or board actually need it, counted in days on snow. Your own work and the shop's sit on one list.

Who it is for

Skiers and snowboarders who wax their own kit, and families keeping track of several pairs.

How to use it

  1. Copy the make, model, length and bindings, and the edge angles the shop set.
  2. Add a line each time you wax, touch up the edges or repair the base.
  3. Count the days on snow since the last wax and write it in.
  4. Note shop tunes with the ticket number, and binding checks with who did them.
  5. Run the signs list before each trip and book work when one shows.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: One pair of skis or one board per sheet: every wax, edge touch-up, base repair, shop tune and binding check, with the days on snow since the last wax, so the work gets done when it is due rather than when it is remembered.

Write-on lines: Skis or board: make & model · Length · Year · Serial · Bindings: make & model · Edge angles, base / side, from the shop · Bindings last set by, date

Tuning record — your own work and the shop's, on the same list

Table, 10 rows: Date · Days · Snow · Wax · Edges · Base repair · Shop tune · Bindings · How it felt

Before each trip, look for — any one of these means it is due

  • Base dry or whitish, often near the edges
  • Edges skid on hard snow or ice
  • Burrs, nicks or rust along the edges
  • Core shot: a gouge down to the core
  • Binding screws loose, or a part cracked
  • Slow, or sticking on the flat sections

Questions

Why are no edge angles or binding settings printed?

Edge angles are a choice made for the skis and the skier, and binding release settings should be worked out and set by a trained technician. Write in what the shop set, so you know what to ask for next time.

How many days does a wax last?

It depends on the wax, the snow and how you ski, so no figure is printed. Counting days since the last wax, and noting how it felt, shows you how long yours lasts.
