Fill it in type and save
The fillable versions have real form fields — open them in any PDF reader, type into them and save. Printing help.
See where the weight in a pack really is, system by system, instead of guessing. The same list works as the packing checklist and, after the trip, as the record of what was never used.
Backpackers, long-distance walkers, bikepackers and anyone trying to carry less.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: Everything you carry, weighed and listed by system and flagged base, worn or consumable, so the totals give base weight and pack weight. Tick it found, checked and packed; after the trip, mark what you used.
Write-on lines: Trip · Dates · Days · Scale and units (g, oz)
Also printed: Flag: B = base, carried all trip W = worn on the body C = consumable: food, water, fuel · Item · Qty · Each · Total · Flag · Found · Checked · Packed · Used · Notes · weight · spare, swap, leave home · Shelter · Sleep system · Pack and liner · Kitchen and stove · Water · Clothing carried
Also printed: Item · Qty · Each · Total · Flag · Found · Checked · Packed · Used · Notes · weight · spare, swap, leave home · Clothing and footwear worn · Navigation and safety · First aid and repair · Electronics and light · Toiletries · Food and fuel
Write-on lines: Base weight (all B) · Worn (all W) · Consumables (all C) · Pack weight (B + C) · Skin-out (B + W + C) · Food per day · Days · Food total · Water carried · Fuel
Ruled lines: After the trip: not used, missing, to swap or to leave at home
Everything carried in the pack for the whole trip that is not eaten, drunk or burned, and not worn on the body. Food, water and fuel are consumables, and the clothes and shoes you walk in are worn.
No figure is printed, because the right weight depends on the route, the season, the weather and what keeps you safe. The list shows where your own weight is, so you can decide what to change.
Turn a walk you have in your head into a page somebody else can hand over if you do not come back, and make yourself think about escape routes before you are standing on the hill.
Pack the same way every time without relying on memory, and find out on the drive home that something was left on a pitch rather than next season.
Know the state of a tent before the next trip, not when it is half pitched in the rain. Every reproof, patch and new pole section is on one record.
Get a young person to the campsite with what they need and home again with what they took, by putting the packing in their hands with an adult checking it.
Every sheet, binder, game and puzzle on Upkeep Papers is free to download, with no email and no account. Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee. It is entirely optional: nothing is locked, and nothing changes if you don’t.
