What this sheet is for

Get a young person to the campsite with what they need and home again with what they took, by putting the packing in their hands with an adult checking it.

Who it is for

Scout, guide, cadet, youth group and church group leaders, and the parents and carers doing the packing the night before.

How to use it

  1. Cross out anything your trip does not need and write in what it does.
  2. Send it home with the young person well before the trip, not the night before.
  3. Tick each item as it is packed, and have an adult check the bag afterwards.
  4. Name everything, and hand any medication to the leader on arrival.
  5. Work through the same list on the last morning to pack for home.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: The kit list that goes home with a young person before a camp or residential trip — packed by them, checked by an adult, and worked through again on the last morning to get it all home.

A starting list, not a fixed one. Cross out what does not apply and write in what your trip needs: the list depends on the season, the site and what your group is providing. Name everything.

Questions

Why does the list not say how many pairs of socks to bring?

Because it depends on how long you are away, the time of year and how wet the site is. Your leaders know that and can write the numbers in beside each line before the list goes home.

Why use the same list twice?

Because the second use is the one that gets things home. On the last morning half a tent's worth of kit is usually spread across a field, and working down the list that packed the bag is quicker than trying to remember what was in it.
