What this sheet is for

Record one incubation properly so that a poor hatch can be diagnosed rather than shrugged at.

Who it is for

Anyone hatching eggs — backyard keepers, breeders, schools and smallholders.

How to use it

  1. Write your incubator's settings in the header before setting the eggs.
  2. Candle at the points your species needs and record what you saw.
  3. Remove clears and early deaths, and record them — they are the diagnosis.
  4. Work out the hatch rate from fertile eggs, not from eggs set.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

What temperature and humidity should I use?

The sheet prints none. They differ by species and, importantly, by machine — a still-air and a forced-air incubator are not run at the same temperature. Your incubator's manual is the authority, and the header exists to hold its figures.

Why record fertile eggs separately?

Because hatch rate from eggs set and hatch rate from fertile eggs are different numbers with different causes. A poor first figure with a good second one is a problem with the breeding birds, not the incubator.
