What this sheet is for
Record each birth while the detail is still exact, including the assistance and the losses, so next season is planned from what happened rather than what you recall.
Who it is for
Anyone lambing or calving — smallholders through to commercial flocks and herds.
How to use it
- Fill it in the same day. Timings and assistance are the first details to blur.
- Record losses honestly; a season read back without them teaches nothing.
- Note colostrum, because it is the question asked about every sick youngster later.
- Write down what you would do differently with that dam next time.
What is on the sheet
The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.
Questions
Does the sheet say when to intervene?
No, and it never will. When to assist and when to call a vet is a judgement made in front of the animal by somebody who can see it, and it depends on the dam, the species and your own experience. This records what you decided.
