Know what is in the colostrum fridge and freezer, how good each bag is and when it must be used. Nothing is fed past its date or thrown out without a reason.

See which calves got good colostrum soon enough, and which were fed late, short or by tube. A gap in first feeding then shows up while there is still time to change it.
Dairy and suckler farmers, calf rearers and anyone on night duty in the calving shed.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: One line per calf from birth: the colostrum it got and where it came from, its Brix reading, how much, how and how soon, then the second feed.
Your targets, from your vet. No timing, volume or Brix figure is printed. Write the first-feed targets your farm works to in the boxes below, with where they came from, and judge each calf against those. Note every calf that missed one and why, so a pattern across the season shows up.
Write-on lines: Farm or holding · Season · Refractometer · Volumes in · First feed within · First feed volume · Brix at least · Second feed within · Targets from
Also printed: First feed · Second feed · Calf · Dam · Born · Help · Source · Brix · Time · Volume · How · Notes · tag · date, time · calving · dam, batch · reading
Also printed: First feed · Second feed · Calf · Dam · Born · Help · Source · Brix · Time · Volume · How · Notes · tag · date, time · calving · dam, batch · reading
Ruled lines: Calves that missed a target, and what was changed for the next one
Because the targets depend on the calf's size, the breed and your vet's advice, and they are revised as research moves on. Write the targets your farm works to at the top and judge every calf against those.
Where the colostrum came from: the calf's own dam, a stored bag (with its number from the store record) or a replacer. That lets a poor result be traced back to the batch.
Know what is in the colostrum fridge and freezer, how good each bag is and when it must be used. Nothing is fed past its date or thrown out without a reason.
Record each birth while the detail is still exact, including the assistance and the losses, so next season is planned from what happened rather than what you recall.
Record weaning properly, because the age and weight it happened at explains a lot of what the group does afterwards.
Hold the herd's detail in one legible place, so tags, parentage and movements can be read off a page instead of assembled from memory and text messages.

Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee.
