What this sheet is for

Turn repeat drain blockages into a dated pattern a plumber or insurer can follow. A camera survey or a repair quote can then be read against the line's whole history.

Who it is for

Homeowners and landlords responsible for a private drain or sewer lateral, especially where trees grow near the line.

How to use it

  1. Sketch the route from the house to the public sewer and number every cleanout, chamber and rodding eye.
  2. Ask the water company, sewer district or council where your part ends, and write it down with who told you.
  3. After every blockage, clearance or camera survey, fill a line: symptom, cause found, method, contractor and cost.
  4. Record repairs and relining with the guarantee end date, and keep the reports with the sheet.

What is on the sheet

Printed under the title: The private drain from the house to the public sewer: its route and access points on this page, then every blockage, survey and repair in date order, so a problem that keeps coming back shows as a pattern.

Where your part ends. Who is responsible for which length of the drain is not the same everywhere. Ask your water company, sewer district or council where your part ends, and write the answer below with who gave it. Keep camera survey reports and contractor invoices with this sheet.

Questions

Who is responsible for the sewer pipe outside my house?

It depends on where you live: the split between the property owner and the sewer authority is drawn differently from place to place. Ask your water company, sewer district or council, and write their answer and the date on the sheet so it is not asked twice.

Why record the method used each time?

Because roots cut back by rods or jetting can grow back, and a line cleared the same way again and again points to a repair rather than another clearance. Seeing the method and the cause side by side is what makes that visible.
