What this sheet is for

Answer the two questions that always follow a septic problem: when was it last emptied, and by whom.

Who it is for

Anyone on a private drainage system — septic tank, cesspool or package treatment plant.

How to use it

  1. Record the tank type, capacity and where the access covers are.
  2. Log every emptying with the contractor and the waste transfer paperwork.
  3. Note sludge depth or condition if the contractor reports it.
  4. Use the warning-signs list at each check.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

How often does a septic tank need emptying?

It depends on tank size, household size and system type, and in some places it is set by local rules. Ask your contractor what interval they recommend for your tank and record it here.

Do I need to register a septic tank?

In several countries and states, yes — private drainage is regulated, and rules on discharge and registration vary by area and change over time. Check with your local authority or environment agency.
