Vehicle Road Test Sheet

A free printable road test sheet — route, mileage, trade plate, what was checked on the drive, what was heard or felt, and whether the car goes back to the ramp.

First page of the Vehicle Road Test Sheet — Turn 'took it round the block, seemed fine' into a record of what was actually tried, on what road, by whom — before the car goes back to its owner.

What this sheet is for

Turn 'took it round the block, seemed fine' into a record of what was actually tried, on what road, by whom — before the car goes back to its owner.

Who it is for

Technicians, workshop controllers and MOT testers who road test before or after work, and independent garages that want the drive on paper.

How to use it

  1. Record the mileage out, the trade plate and why the car is being driven.
  2. Write the route and conditions — a noise on a rough lane is not a noise on the bypass.
  3. Tick each item tried as OK or fault, and describe what was noticed and when.
  4. Record the outcome: back to the customer, or back to the ramp for what.
  5. Sign it and note the time and mileage back in.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: The drive after the work, or before the diagnosis — what was checked on the road, what was heard or felt, and whether the car goes back to the ramp or back to the customer.

Your procedure, your route. What the tester found, not what the test demands — how far to drive and what counts as acceptable come from your workshop's procedure and the maker's data, so write the route in.

  • Suspension knocks and rattles over bumps
  • Noise or vibration under load and on overrun
  • Warning lights and gauges

Questions

Why is the checklist so general?

Because what needs trying depends on the job and on your workshop's own road-test procedure. The list covers the areas a drive can reveal; the ruled space beside each item is where the detail for this car and this repair goes.

Is there a pass or fail?

No. The outcome is what you decide from what you found — the sheet has a result field and a 'back to ramp for' field, and no printed threshold for either.
