Pin down where rainwater gets in by watching what it does around the house in a downpour. Outside and inside go on the same line, so the link shows.
Homeowners and landlords chasing damp, a wet cellar or puddling against the walls, and the surveyors helping them.

Printed under the title: What water does around the house in heavy rain: every downpipe, gully and drain numbered on a sketch, then what each one did, where water pooled, and any damp inside, so the way in can be pinned down.
Describe the rain in words. No rainfall figures are needed: describe the rain in words, or copy a reading from a local weather station if you want one. Watch from indoors or under cover while it pours and go out once it eases. A drain that backs up into the property is one for your water company or a drainage contractor.

No. Describing the rain in words, such as light, steady or a downpour, and how long it lasted is enough to compare one storm with the next. If you want a figure, copy it from a local weather station rather than guessing.
Damp that appears after rain, near a downpipe that empties against the wall or ground that falls toward it, points to the outside rather than condensation. Putting the observation and the damp inside on the same line makes that link visible.
Keep gutters on a schedule instead of clearing them after the damp appears, and record faults you spotted but did not fix.
Show a surveyor or insurer whether a crack is growing or only moving with the seasons. The readings are taken the same way every time, so they can be compared.
Know the backwater valve works before the sewer backs up, not when it does. Each line dates one opening, cleaning and check of the gate and seal.
Get the roofline job down run by run while you are still up the ladder. The rot and the nests are covered over an hour later and argued about a year on; this is where they are written down first.
Every sheet, binder, game and puzzle on Upkeep Papers is free to download, with no email and no account. Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee.
