What this sheet is for

Match a recall notice or a pet's bad reaction to the exact bag, tin or box of food. The details a maker asks for are written down before the pack goes in the bin.

Who it is for

Pet owners, especially of animals with sensitive stomachs or allergies, and multi-pet homes, sitters and rescues that buy food in bulk.

How to use it

  1. Start a line when a new bag, tin, box or pouch is opened, copying the lot number and best-by date exactly as printed.
  2. Write the barcode digits and where and when you bought it.
  3. Note which pets it is fed to, and keep the pack until the food is finished.
  4. If a pet reacts, write the date and what you saw on that line, and phone your vet.
  5. Note at the foot when you last checked the recall lists for your country.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: One line per bag, tin, box or pouch: the lot number and best-by date as printed, where and when it was bought, when it was opened and finished, which pets ate it and anything that went wrong.

Keep the pack until it is empty. Copy the lot number and best-by date exactly as printed, and keep the bag, tin or box until the food is finished: anyone handling a complaint or a recall will ask for them, with where and when you bought it. If a pet seems unwell after eating, phone your vet first, then write down what you saw.

Questions

Where do I find the lot number?

Usually printed or stamped near the best-by date: on the base of a tin, the top or back of a bag, or the end of a box. It may be labelled lot or batch, or be a code on its own. Copy it exactly, letters and spaces included.

Why keep the packaging until the food is finished?

Because a maker or regulator handling a complaint will ask for the details on it, and sometimes for the pack itself. Once it is in the bin, the lot number usually goes with it.

Where do I report a problem with pet food?

To the maker or retailer, and in many countries to a food or veterinary regulator as well. The routes differ by country, so check the rules where you are, and write the reference you are given at the foot of the sheet.
