What this sheet is for
See where three quotes actually differ, which is usually in what has been left out rather than in the number at the bottom.
Who it is for
Anyone getting quotes for building, extension, kitchen, bathroom or garden work, at any size of job.
How to use it
- Write the scope down once and ask every contractor to price the same thing.
- Fill in the excluded row as carefully as the included one — that is where the difference between two quotes usually lives.
- Tick the insurance and references rows only when you have seen them yourself.
- Fill in the price row last, so you read the sheet before you read the number.
What is on the sheet
The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.
Questions
Why is price the last row on the sheet?
Because it is the row everybody reads first, and reading it first makes the rest of the sheet feel like justification. Filling it in last means you compare scope before cost.
How many quotes should I get?
Three is the common convention because it shows you the shape of the market rather than a single opinion. The sheet has three columns for that reason, but the number is your call.
