Moving House Checklist

What this sheet is for

Work backwards from the moving date instead of remembering things in the wrong order, and see at a glance what has actually been done rather than what has been worried about.

Who it is for

Anyone moving, buying or renting — and particularly anyone moving with children, pets or a job to keep going at the same time.

How to use it

1. Print it as soon as a date is agreed, and write the date at the top.
2. Cross out what does not apply to your move and write in what does.
3. Date each line as it is done — the date column is what stops a job being done twice or not at all.
4. Keep the moving day and first week sections with you, not in the van.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Are these timings right for where I live?

They are a working order, not a rule. How much notice utilities, schools and local registers need differs by country and sometimes by region, and a rented move runs to a different clock from a purchase. Move the lines to fit yours.

Why is reading the meters on the moving day list?

Because it is the one job on the day that nobody can go back and do afterwards. A photographed final reading at the old address and an opening reading at the new one prevent most change-over disputes.
