What this sheet is for

Set your limit in writing before bidding starts, with the premium and fees included, so the number you bid to is one you decided calmly.

Who it is for

Buyers at general, classic vehicle, antique, machinery, house-clearance and online timed auctions.

How to use it

  1. Read the terms and find the buyer's premium and taxes before setting any limit.
  2. View the lots. Condition reports and photographs are written to sell.
  3. Set the limit as the total you will pay, then work back to a hammer figure.
  4. Write what each lot actually sold for, win or lose.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Why work back from a total rather than bidding to a hammer price?

Because the hammer price is never what you pay. Premium, taxes, any online surcharge and getting the thing home can add a substantial amount, and people discover that after the hammer has fallen. Deciding the total first is the entire point of the sheet.
