What this sheet is for

Measure growth to weaning against the ewe that reared it, which is the fairest test of a breeding ewe there is.

Who it is for

Flock keepers recording performance, and anyone selecting replacements.

How to use it

  1. Record birth weight — without it the gain figures mean less.
  2. Weigh on the same scales, and note when they were last checked.
  3. Record the dam on every line.
  4. Review the best rearing ewes at the end of the season.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

What daily gain should I expect?

No figure is printed. It depends on breed, system, forage and season, and comparing your lambs against somebody else's figures is usually misleading. Compare within your own flock and across your own years.
