What this sheet is for

Record weights and condition regularly, because a fleece hides both loss and gain until it is serious.

Who it is for

Alpaca and llama keepers, from a pair in a paddock to a breeding herd.

How to use it

  1. Weigh rather than eyeball. The fleece makes eyeballing useless.
  2. Score condition by hand, over the backbone, and say which scale you use.
  3. Record toenails and teeth; both are easy to leave far too long.
  4. Keep shearing dates on the same sheet as the weights.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

What should an alpaca weigh?

No target is printed. It varies by size, age and type, and the useful signal is the trend in your own animal rather than a number from a website.
