What this sheet is for

Keep phone and counter orders in one numbered list so the bag matches the customer, the promised time is written down and nothing is left under the lamp.

Who it is for

Cafés, chip shops, pizzerias, pubs doing food to go and any kitchen that takes orders by phone or at the counter without an app.

How to use it

  1. Number each order as it comes in and write the number on the bag or box.
  2. Take the name and a phone number, then the order in full, with any allergen flagged.
  3. Write the total from the till and how it is being paid.
  4. Fill in the time promised, and the time and initials when it is handed over.
  5. Total the orders and the cash at the end and hand the sheet to whoever cashes up.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Phone and counter takeaway orders in the order they came in — who, what, when it was promised, whether it is paid, and a tick when it left the building — so nothing is handed to the wrong person or forgotten under the lamp.

The till sets the price. Prices come from your own menu and your till — write the total from the till, not from memory. Orders that arrive through a delivery app have their own reconciliation and do not belong here unless you choose to log everything in one place.

Orders — number them as they come in — the number goes on the bag

Table, 10 rows: No. · Time taken · Name & phone · Order · Total · Paid? · Ready for · Collected

Write-on lines: Orders taken · Collected · Not collected · Cash taken for takeaway · Handed to till

Questions

Why write the total from the till rather than add it up here?

Because the till is the record that gets cashed up. Prices change, offers apply and a total worked out on the pad will not always match; the sheet should agree with the till, not compete with it.

What about orders from delivery apps?

They come with their own order numbers and their own settlement, so they are better reconciled separately. You can log them here if you want a single list of everything leaving the kitchen, but keep the app's number in the order column.
