What this sheet is for

Write an invoice by hand when you need one, in a layout that leaves room for whatever your country requires rather than assuming a set of fields.

Who it is for

Sole traders, market stalls, casual work, weekend trades, and anyone who invoices occasionally enough that software is not worth it.

How to use it

  1. Number your invoices in a sequence and never reuse a number.
  2. Write what was supplied plainly enough that a stranger could match it to the job.
  3. Label the total lines yourself — subtotal, whatever tax applies, total.
  4. Say how to pay and by when, on the invoice itself.
  5. Keep a copy. How long for depends on where you are.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Does this invoice meet the legal requirements where I am?

We cannot say, and we deliberately do not try. Requirements differ by country, by trade and by whether you are registered for a sales tax. That is exactly why the fields are blank rather than pre-labelled — check what applies to you and fill them in.

Why is there no tax rate or calculation?

Because printing one would be wrong for most readers and would be relied on by some of them. The sheet holds your figures; it does not produce them.
