Home Ventilation Check Sheet
Check that the vents, fans and air bricks the house already has are open and working. Closed trickle vents, dead fans and buried air bricks are easy to miss, and this puts each one on paper with who was told.

Keep each humidifier's tank emptied, dried and cleaned the way its manual says. Water left standing in a tank, and scale on its parts, are what the makers' cleaning instructions are there to prevent.
Households running portable or furnace-mounted humidifiers through the dry months, including in a child's or an older relative's room.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: Each humidifier listed once with the cleaning method, interval and water its manual gives, then every empty and refill, clean, descale and filter change, with what was found in the tank.
The manual sets the routine. No cleaning interval, cleaning product or humidity level is printed: they depend on the type of unit and are in its manual, so copy them into the unit list. Empty and dry the tank rather than topping up standing water, unplug the unit before cleaning, and rinse out any cleaner before refilling.

As often as its manual says. Ultrasonic, evaporative, steam and furnace-mounted units are cleaned differently and on different schedules, so the sheet has a column for each unit's own interval rather than one printed figure for all of them.
The sheet does not set a target. If you measure, write the reading in the log, and take the level to aim for from the unit's maker or a health body. Condensation on windows and walls is a sign the air is already damp enough.

Stop measuring a clogged filter in a dark loft. Write the size down the first time, then reorder without taking the old one out.
Separate the annual professional service from the filter changes you do yourself, and keep both on one sheet.
Collect the numbers you can never find when something breaks: model and serial numbers, install dates, and when the warranty runs out.
