Keep track of every taphole so next year's go into fresh wood, and see what each season made. The daily log ties each run of sap to the readings on your own thermometer.
Hobby syrup makers, smallholders and woodland owners tapping maples or other sap trees.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: Each tapped tree with its trunk measured and its tapholes placed, then a daily log of the run: your own readings, the sap collected, when it was boiled and the syrup made.
Your guide's figures, your trees' record. How many taps a trunk of a given size can take, how far to keep from old holes and how long sap keeps are in your extension or producers' guide; no figure is printed here. Record where every hole went so next year's avoid them, keep sap cold and covered, and boil it soon.

The sheet does not say, because the guidance depends on trunk size, tree health and the guide you follow. Take the figure from your extension or producers' guide, and record the trunk measurement so the decision can be checked later.
Wood around an old taphole no longer gives sap well, so guides tell you to keep new holes away from it. Writing each hole's side and height every year lets next season's tapping avoid them.

Trace any jar on the shelf back to the day it was filled, the produce that went into it and the recipe you worked from.
Keep a new tree alive through its first summers by making the watering and checks visible, and know afterwards which trees from which nursery actually took.
Find out what the holding actually costs against what it produces, which is a question most smallholdings avoid asking.
