What this sheet is for
Know what is already in the seed box, and whether it still comes up, before you spend January ordering another copy of it.
Who it is for
Vegetable gardeners, allotment holders, smallholders and seed savers keeping a seed box across more than one season.
How to use it
- Empty the box once and write in every packet: name, variety, supplier and year.
- Copy the sow-by date from the packet — it is the packet's figure, not a general rule.
- Test anything you are unsure of: count out a sample, count how many germinate, and record both numbers and the date.
- Write the quantity remaining before you order, and order against the gaps.
What is on the sheet
The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.
Questions
How long does seed stay viable?
It depends on the species and on how it has been kept — cool, dry and dark storage changes the answer a great deal, and different crops behave very differently. No lifespans are printed on this sheet for that reason. The packet gives its own sow-by date, and a germination test on your own seed beats any general figure.
What germination percentage is worth recording?
Whatever you measured. The useful part is the comparison: the same variety tested two seasons running, or two packets of the same crop from different years, tells you something about your storage that a printed table cannot.
