What this sheet is for

Look the whole lawn over on the same points before buying feed or hiring a scarifier. Writing down what each zone shows makes it clear which problem to tackle first.

Who it is for

Homeowners, gardeners and groundskeepers deciding what a lawn needs before treating it.

How to use it

  1. Sketch the lawn and split it into up to four zones that look or behave differently.
  2. For each zone, estimate cover, weeds and moss by eye, measure thatch on a cut plug and test compaction with a probe or screwdriver.
  3. Lift a small square of turf in each zone and look for grubs.
  4. Write the planned action for each zone and a date to look again.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Each part of the lawn looked at on the same points, from cover and thatch to shade, wear and grubs, before deciding whether to feed, aerate, scarify, overseed or start again.

Look before you treat. Estimate cover and weeds by eye, cut out a plug to measure thatch, push a screwdriver or probe in to judge compaction and lift a small square of turf to look for grubs. No thresholds are printed: whether a reading needs action is for your soil test, your adviser or the guide you follow.

Write-on lines: Garden or site · Date · Looked at by · Last soil test

Squared grid: Sketch the lawn: mark zones A to D, trees, paths, and any wet, bare or worn spots

Also printed: Look at · Zone A · Zone B · Zone C · Zone D · Grass cover, your estimate · Bare patches: where, how big · Thatch: depth, how measured · Compaction: probe, screwdriver · Weeds: which, how much · Moss: how much, where · Water lying after rain · Shade: hours, cast by what · Wear: paths, play, pets · Grubs under a lifted square · Planned action · Reassess on

Questions

Why are there no thresholds for thatch, compaction or grubs?

Because what counts as too much depends on the grass, the soil, the use and the guide you follow, and a printed figure would be wrong for many lawns. Measure what is there and take the decision from your soil test, adviser or chosen guide.

How often should I fill this in?

Whenever you are about to decide on a treatment, and again on the reassess date you set. Two sheets for the same zones, side by side, show whether the work made a difference.
