What this sheet is for
Know which heap is ready and what has already been spread where, instead of guessing at both every spring.
Who it is for
Allotment holders, kitchen gardeners, smallholders and anyone running more than one compost bin.
How to use it
- Start a line the day a heap or bin is begun, and keep adding to the contents column.
- Write each turning date in as you do it — that column is the whole point of the row.
- Record soil test readings by bed, with the kit or laboratory you used.
- Log improvers and mulches by bed so you can see what has had what, and when.
What is on the sheet
The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.
Questions
Why is there no target pH printed?
Because what suits one crop does not suit another, and the reading also depends on your soil and on the test you used. Your test kit's instructions and growing guidance for your area are the right source; this sheet records what you measured.
How often should a heap be turned?
That depends on what is in it, how big it is and how quickly you want it, and growers run heaps very differently. The sheet gives you a wide column for turning dates so you can see what your own heaps actually respond to.
