What this sheet is for

Answer a family's question from a page rather than from memory, and keep the condition of each memorial written down between inspections.

Who it is for

Parochial church councils, chapel trustees, burial ground committees and volunteers who look after a churchyard or small cemetery.

How to use it

  1. Number the plots on your own plan first, and keep the plan with this sheet.
  2. Enter one row per plot, using the names as your burial register records them.
  3. Note the grave holder and how to reach them, where that is known.
  4. Record the date of each inspection and what the memorial looked like.
  5. Flag anything leaning, cracked or unsafe for your committee to decide on.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A churchyard or burial ground plot by plot — who lies there, who holds the grave, what stands on it and when it was last looked at.

Your burial authority's rules. Who may be buried or have ashes interred, what memorial is allowed and how often stones are inspected are set by your own burial authority, diocese or trustees, and by the rules where you are. Record their decisions here; none of them is printed.

Questions

Why no inspection interval on the sheet?

Because it is set by whoever is responsible for the ground — your burial authority, diocese or trustees — and by the rules where you are. The sheet records the date each inspection happened and leaves the timetable to them.

Is this a replacement for the burial register?

No. The statutory register, wherever you are, stays as it is. This is the working sheet for looking after the ground: plots, contacts, memorials and condition.
