What this sheet is for

Keep a tower's own history of what was rung and who rang it, so a year of practices is something you can look back through rather than guess at.

Who it is for

Tower captains, ringing masters and secretaries of a band, and anyone keeping the book in the ringing chamber of a parish church.

How to use it

  1. Write the tower and the year at the top and keep the sheet in the ringing chamber.
  2. Add a line for every practice, service, quarter or peal as soon as it is rung.
  3. Record the method or touch as your band names it, not as anyone else would.
  4. Use the notes column for firsts, visitors, and anything wrong with a rope or a bell.
  5. File the finished sheets together — they become the tower's record.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A tower's own record of what was rung and who rang it — practices, services, quarters and peals, one line each, kept in the ringing chamber rather than in somebody's head.

Your band's own names for things. This is a record of what happened, not a judgement on it. Write the method or touch as your band names it, and leave the notes column for the things worth remembering: a first away from cover, a rope needing attention, a visitor who rang.

Questions

Why is there nowhere to record how long a peal took?

There is — the notes column takes it, along with the composition and anything else a performance needs. Keeping one wide notes column rather than a set of narrow ones means the sheet suits a practice night and a peal equally well.

Can a band use this alongside its online records?

Yes. The chamber copy is what gets filled in at the time, in pencil, by whoever is standing there. Transcribing it later into whatever system you use is easier from a complete sheet than from memory.
