What this sheet is for
Give any small pet a weekly weight record, which is the earliest warning available for animals that hide illness by instinct.
Who it is for
Owners of rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, ferrets, birds and reptiles.
How to use it
- Weigh weekly, same scales, same time of day.
- Record it even when nothing has changed — that is what makes it a baseline.
- Note eating, drinking and droppings on the same line.
- Take the chart to the vet rather than describing the trend.
What is on the sheet
The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.
Questions
Why weekly rather than monthly?
Because small animals can lose a serious proportion of their body weight in a fortnight, and a monthly record can miss the whole episode. Weekly is frequent enough to catch it and infrequent enough to actually keep up.
What weight should my pet be?
No targets are printed — species and breeds vary far too much. What matters is the trend in your own animal, and a steady fall is a reason to ring the vet whatever the number is.
