What this sheet is for

Keep the maintenance round on a record, including the filter media detail that decides whether a tank stays stable.

Who it is for

Fishkeepers of any experience, and anyone sharing a tank's care.

How to use it

  1. Record the volume changed, not just that you changed water.
  2. Note that the new water was temperature-matched and dechlorinated.
  3. Never replace all filter media at once, and record what you did replace.
  4. Run the equipment checks monthly.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

How much water should I change, and how often?

No figure is printed. It depends on stocking, filtration, planting and what you keep. Your own nitrate readings on the water test sheet are the best guide you will get.

Why rinse filter media in tank water?

Because tap water in most places contains chlorine or chloramine, which kills the bacteria the filter depends on. Rinsing media under the tap is one of the commonest ways a cycled tank is crashed by somebody trying to be helpful.
